Top of Gjalica tour (Brekije – Tershene– Bice trail)

The vegetation of Gjalica is rare. On the north-western side, the following grow: the hornbeam (which is widespread at elevations above 1500 – 1800 meters above sea level) and pine trees. The eastern slopes have rich alpine pastures.
On Mount Gjalica, several endemic plants found in the Kukës region can be encountered, such as: the Albanian violet, the Albanian lily (Lilium albanicum Griseb), wild garlic (a member of the lily family), the larch (the only evergreen that sheds its leaves), hormoq, hartina, white fir, wild poplar, and others. Mount Gjalica is primarily covered with hornbeam and pine forests, which are currently severely damaged by a range of factors

Details

This trail is marked from the village of Bice – Shkalla e Keqe – Tershen – Kroi Kuq. Local guides through NAK – Natural Adventure of Kukës have placed wooden directional signs, but unfortunately, over time, these have been damaged and are no longer functional. Points of interest along the trail:

  • The Brekije huts, Kroi Kuq, Vojvoda, and after that, the descent to the villages of Shpan and Tershen, offering magnificent views.
  • Then you pass through Shkalla e Keqe, a natural wonder, and a legend is also associated with it. According to the legend, a young man from the nearby villages loved a girl from far away, and her father, who was reluctant to give her to him, told him: "You have a task to prove yourself. If you manage to pass the 'Shkalla e Keqe' (Bad Stair), there is a pine tree at the top; if you cut it, the girl is yours."
  • The young man, after thinking it over, finally decided to cut the pine. He took the axe, approached the Bad Stair, and with the strength and wisdom given by God, he succeeded in cutting the pine. It is said that even today, the trunk of that pine remains at the top of the rocky slope of Shkalla e Keqe.
