Kukes city

Culture tour

Kukes culture tour is a short walk to some historical, cultural, artistic, and crafts specialties that enrich the city. The walk aims to introduce visitors to three levels of the city’s life: underwater – where the old city lies; underground – where about 7 km of tunnels extend; and above ground – where people continue modernizing their traditional life. The selected destinations for this walk are listed chronologically, but the location of some of them may change the following order during the journey in the city.

Located in a traditional building, it displays artifacts such as clothing, tools, and household items that highlight local customs and daily life. The museum also explores the area's history, flora, and fauna. Nearby, the Memorial Tower honors the town's role in hosting over 500,000 Kosovar refugees in 1999. It's a must-visit for those wanting to learn about Kukës' past and resilience.

  •  Radio Kukesi Radio Kukësi, established in 1959, is a key radio station in northern Albania, offering a mix of news, cultural content, and entertainment in Albanian. Part of the RTSH network, it is available online and via radio frequencies, reaching a wide audience.
  • Underground Kukes Beneath the town of Kukës lies an extensive network of underground tunnels, constructed during the communist era as a civil defense measure. Designed to shelter up to 10,000 people in the event of war, these tunnels include living spaces, administrative offices, and even a military command center. Today, parts of this subterranean complex are accessible to the public, offering a unique glimpse into Albania's Cold War history.
